How to Choose the Best Photo for Custom Diamond Art
Choose a photo with the clarity, lighting, crop, composition, and permissions needed for a stronger custom diamond painting result.
A custom diamond painting can preserve a pet, portrait, wedding, family moment, or favorite place—but the canvas can reproduce only the visual information available in the source photo. A strong image is more important than a dramatic filter.
1. Use the original file when possible
Choose the original photograph from the camera or phone rather than a screenshot copied from social media. Messaging and social platforms often reduce resolution and introduce compression.
2. Make the main subject large in the frame
A distant face contains fewer usable details. Crop unused background so the person, pet, or object occupies more of the image. More people require more canvas area to keep faces recognizable.
3. Prefer even, natural-looking light
Strong backlighting can turn faces dark, while direct flash can remove subtle detail. Choose a photo where important features are visible without extreme highlights or shadows.
4. Check focus at full size
Zoom in on the eyes, facial features, fur, or key details. If they are blurred in the original, increasing canvas size cannot recreate information that was never captured.
5. Keep the background from competing
A simple background lets the subject remain clear. Busy crowds, text, fences, foliage, and tiny objects consume grid space that could otherwise describe the main subject.
6. Match the crop to the canvas orientation
Portrait orientation
Works well for standing people, close-up faces, pets sitting upright, and tall architecture.
Landscape orientation
Works well for groups, wide scenery, vehicles, couples, and panoramic locations.
7. Give detailed photos enough canvas area
Small canvases use fewer grid positions. Fine facial details, several people, text, and complex scenery usually need a larger canvas. Use the size guide.
8. Avoid tiny text and thin lines
Small letters, delicate jewelry, narrow glasses, fine whiskers, and thin architectural details may merge or disappear when converted to a grid.
9. Be careful with filters
Heavy beauty filters, artificial blur, extreme saturation, or high-contrast effects can produce unnatural drill transitions. A clean original usually gives more flexibility.
10. Confirm you have the right to use the image
